Like a Mad Titan gathering Infinity Stones, Marvel Studios is gearing up to take all the money at the box office this week. It wouldn’t be a stretch to call Avengers: Infinity War one of the biggest blockbusters of all time. It’s got setup from eighteen different movies spread across ten years, with a cast too big to even fit on the poster and a rumored budget far exceeding $250 million. Audiences aren’t oblivious to this, and neither are the box office analysts. As the hype from fans grows with international release on the horizon, the projected numbers for its opening gross is growing as well.
Opening week is expected to bring in a whopping $498 million worldwide. Yes, that’s nearly half a billion in less than seven days. About half of that will come from international markets and half from the domestic American market. The domestic projections are varied- some are putting it at $235 million while others are more confident, projecting $275 million. Either way, Infinity War is guaranteed to have one of the largest openings of all time. If it does reach $275 million, it will outgross current #1 record holder Star Wars: The Force Awakens‘ opening weekend of $247.9 million. Foreign numbers are somewhere in the range of $256-275 million.
Fandango has reported that pre-ticket sales are the highest of any superhero movie ever. In fact, they’re already double that of the previous record holder- Black Panther, which recently became Marvel Studios’ highest-grossing domestic release. Black Panther‘s mighty reign was destined to be short-lived. The interest for casual movie goers in Infinity War is even higher than that of Star Wars: The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi. Being a little generous, but not unreasonable, this week alone could push it past $500 million worldwide. If it comes in on the weaker side of the estimations, it will be the 5th largest all-time worldwide opening. And if it’s on the stronger side, it’ll be the 4th largest all-time worldwide opening. Regardless, it’s more than likely going to outgross the previous Avengers movies.
These numbers don’t surprise me; I already bought my ticket. What about you? Will you be a contributing number to the monumental amount of money Avengers: Infinity War will be making this week? Let us know @SuperBroMovies.
