Kevin Feige Reveals Acquiring NAMOR From Universal Is Complicated

With Disney and Fox currently in talks to return the rights of the X-Men and Fantastic Four to Marvel, it seems the studio will soon have the rights to all of their heroes. But there are still a handful of characters Marvel still doesn’t fully have, including Namor. It was recently revealed by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige that there is still a bit of red tape regarding the Sub-Mariner.

Currently Universal holds the distribution rights to both Namor and Hulk, meaning Marvel Studios cannot make a standalone film starring either character without the approval of Universal, which is why the Hulk hasn’t had a second solo outing. There are rumors which indicate the rights to Namor have loosened enough that Marvel can include Namor in other characters’ films but Feige restated we won’t see a Sub-Mariner film in the near future. During an interview with IGN Feige discussed the complications.

IGN: “With the Disney/Fox deal, if that pans out, with the Sony rights sharing deal with Spidey, the one big loose end, then, is Namor and Universal. Can you tell us what the status of that is? Is there any chance for him to just pop up in an MCU film? It just sounds like an incredibly complicated situation, for one character.”

Kevin Feige: “It is. I think there’s a way to probably figure it out but it does have — it’s not as a clean or clear as the majority of the other characters.”

Namor and the city of Atlantis have been hinted at before even as far back to Iron Man 2. And there have been some theories that we could see the Sub-Mariner show up as an antagonist for Black Panther given their past rivalries. But for now, though we will have to wait and see if Marvel can make a deal happen with Universal and bring the aquatic Avenger into the MCU.
