We are here, Avengers: Infinity War day. As you sit in your local theater waiting for the 7pm showing, why not check out the shortlist of directors for the Black Widow solo film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has set a list of a handful of directors in the hope one will direct the Scarlett Johnannson led film.
The list consists of Deniz Gamze Erguven, best known for her Turkish film Mustang. Chloe Zhao who directed last years The Rider, which premiered at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival. Amma Asante was the final candidate mentioned, her film A United Kingdom opened the 60th London Film Festival in 2016. Marvel has also been meeting with several directors who were not listed.
It appears Marvel is looking at all-female candidates, which makes sense given the character’s history and current portrayal in the MCU. The other note is that they’re not looking at top-tier names which is something Marvel has made a point to do in recent years.
A rumor began swirling this week that the Black Widow solo film would take place before her first MCU appearance in Iron Man 2. It would focus on a Post-Soviet Russia and feature Sebastian Stan’s Winter Soldier, which makes sense given the characters hinted at history.
