Fox brought its upcoming slate of over a dozen movies to a panel at CinemaCon this week. Two of their upcoming movies will see the X-Men franchise go in new directions. Both The New Mutants and the Dark Phoenix adaptation have been delayed several months each. As part of Fox’s presentation, it seems the cosmic story will drop it’s comic source material’s name, similar to The New Mutants and Logan.
Now the movie is simply being titled Dark Phoenix, with an emphasis on the X at the end. It is surprising that Fox is shying away from the name since so many characters are holdovers from X-Men: Apocalypse, even if they’re not proud of that film. This isn’t just part of a presentation design either. Attendees were handed cards showing all of Fox’s upcoming slate and among all the other movie titles, the X-Men film is refered to as just “Dark Phoenix.”
Is this a sign of Fox is distancing themselves from a franchise or chapter model? Will they continue this trend with any other X-Men movies if they hold on to the rights long enough to make more? What do you think of the name change? Tweet us @superbromovies – Cole
