With Avengers: Infinity War being released worldwide this past Friday, it is quickly breaking box office records. Most notably, it has now broken the record for the highest-grossing domestic opening weekend, having earned $250 million. The previous record-holder for the domestic opening weekend was 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which grossed $247.96 million. The film managed to break the record by having earned $106.7 million on Friday, $83 million on Saturday, and $67.7 million from Thursday previews.
Furthermore, the film’s domestic opening weekend gross exceeds the tracking that suggested it would gross $225 million. Based on the high anticipation and word-of-mouth from critics and audiences, it is no surprise that it would break records even within the first few days.
In addition to Infinity War beating out every previous holder for domestic opening weekends, it currently holds the highest grossing opening weekend among the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. This means that it has grossed more money in its first few days than the earlier Avengers films and Marvel’s previous 2017 hit, Black Panther, on their first few days. For reference, here are the domestic opening weekend grosses for all the MCU films (these are not adjusted for inflation):
Iron Man – $98.6M
The Incredible Hulk – $55.4M
Iron Man 2 – $128.1M
Thor – $65.7M
Captain America: The First Avenger – $65.1M
The Avengers – $207.4M
Iron Man 3 – $174.1M
Thor: The Dark World – $85.7M
Captain America: The Winter Soldier – $95M
Guardians of the Galaxy – $94.3M
