From the first moments of Infinity War, you feel heartbreak. You feel anguish, you realize nobody is safe. That at any given in this film… Death may occur. Avengers: Infinity War, truly lives up to the 10-year build-up. Marvel and the Russo Brothers (Captain America: Winter Soldier/Civil War) truly gave us the best Marvel film this far in the franchise. We can even put this film on the properties owned by other studios, and it remains number one. There were so emotions, heartfelt moments, heart-wrenching moments, and surprises… We hope by now, most of you have seen Infinity War, so I bring you the SuperBro Movies spoiler review.
The movie picks up exactly where Thor: Ragnarok left off. If we remember, Thor learned how to hone his powers. He learned that his power comes from within and not from his hammer Mjölnir. He loses his father after already losing his mother. He also finds out he has an evil sister Hela that he has to kill. He also lets Ragnarok aka the Asgardian apocalypse happen. Thor literally loses everything which makes the devastating events of Infinity War that much more hurtful to him.
We remember last seeing Thor, Loki, Heimdall, and Hulk on an Asgardian ship heading towards Earth (maybe). This ship is met by Thanos and the Black Order. We see Hulk fight, Thanos, here. The fight makes you think that hey maybe Hulk can fight Thanos. We soon realize that Hulk is no match for the Mad Titan. We also see the deaths of Heimdall and Loki here.
Heimdall died saving Hulk and using the powers of the Bifröst to send him to Earth (Midgard). Loki died trying to save Thor after handing over the Tesseract. The thing is the Tesseract is what drew Thanos to the Asgardian ship. Loki knew he was the reason for this and sacrifices himself in order to save his brother. They let us know from the beginning that no major character is safe from the hands of the Mad Titan. You get a sense of helplessness and fear. You just have to watch.
The story in the film is very simple. Thanos has seen his entire planet, Titan, fall due to overpopulation. He tried to explain to the leaders of his planet that he had a plan to stop them from dying of starvation. They wouldn’t listen and the planet was destroyed. This led Thanos on his quest to balance the universe. In the comics, we know that it is his obsession with Lady Death that leads him on his warpath, but I feel that this was a much better motivation for him than lust/love.
Thanos’ conquest of the universe has been far and few. He’s decimated Xandar and gotten the Power Stone to start off his battle to balance the universe. He then destroys the Asgardian ship and takes the Tesseract as described above. He then sends his children (The Black Order: Corvus Glaive, Ebony Maw, Proxima Midnight, and Black Dwarf) to Earth to retrieve the Infinity Stones there. The Stones on Earth are the Mind Stone (Vision) and the Time Stone (Dr. Strange). This is where the teams come into play into play.
The first team we get is Thor, Rocket, and Groot. As we all know Thor has lost Mjölnir in his battle with Hela. He needed a weapon specifically for killing Thanos. So they head for Nidavellir, the planet that Thor’s hammer was forged on. Personally, this is my favorite group in the film. You don’t expect them to get along and the fact that we get the ultimate weapon out of this group is amazing.
The second team we get is Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, Drax, Nebula, and Mantis. This team comes together as the Guardians split up with team one and Peter, Gamora, and Drax goes to Knowhere to grab the real stone. As we know Thanos already has the Power Stone and Tesseract at this point. When they appear on Knowhere, he already has the reality stone too and uses it to trick them into trying to kill him. Gamora is kidnapped by Thanos after a failed attempt to end his run for the stones. Drax and Star-Lord end up running their ship into Ebony Maw’s ship. Doctor Strange, Bruce Banner, Iron Man, and Spider-Man all fight the Black Dwarf and Ebony Maw on Earth. Maw kidnaps Doctor Strange because of the Time Stone. This leads Iron Man and Spider-Man to get on Maw’s ship and try to save Strange. This is where we see Iron Man and Spider-Man’s new suits. The Stark tech is amazing and it fits the new locations in the film.
The way the team forms is after Iron Man and Spider-Man save Doctor Strange and send Maw into space; Drax and Star-Lord come crashing into the ship looking for Gamora. They all end up getting into a bit of a tussle and then they all figure out that they’re the good guys and head to Thanos’ home planet, Titan.
The third team is what I like to call Team Wakanda. Captain America, Black Widow, Falcon, Bucky Barnes, Vision, Scarlett Witch, Bruce Banner (Hulkbuster), Black Panther, Okoye, M’Baku, and Shuri. This team forms as Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon help Vision and Scarlett Witch fight Corvus Glaive and Proxima Midnight as they try to take the Mind Stone. They stop the attempt on Vision’s life and safely get him to Wakanda where they can defend him better with the army of Wakanda ready to help their friends and save the Earth.
These three teams are amazing and all play a huge part in the film. Each scene with each team is amazing and you just want more during the final battle in the film where all three must do what they can to stop Thanos. It is better than the groups are sectioned this way because everybody gets the proper screen time in a film about the villain, Thanos. Thanos plays an amazing villain, and between all the flashbacks and present-day scenes you can truly empathize with him and understand him. He’s doing what he feels needs to be done to save the universe from extinction. He doesn’t want to rule the universe, he wants to balance it and stop things like starvation and famine on all planets. The question is, is his way of saving the world to harsh?
We know the story of Gamora and Thanos. We get to see it in the film full fledge. Thanos arrives on Gamora’s home planet and he slaughters millions of citizens. He takes a liking to the feisty little girl who will not let the guards touch her. Thanos pulls the child, Gamora, to the side and distracts her by showing her a knife. He explains that knife represents balance. He gives it to her and asks her to show him that she can balance it while shielding her from the violence.
Gamora hates her father, but she doesn’t understand why he murdered half of her planet when he explains that the planet is thriving because of his murders, she understands. He destroyed famine and poverty in her planet. He also shows you in so many ways throughout the film that he truly loves Gamora. The stones though, he must get the other three stones. We’ve all speculated the location of the Soul Stone, and Gamora knows where it is located. Of course, she isn’t willing to tell Thanos anything. So, he tortures Nebula to get it out of her. After a very intense torture sequence, Gamora spills the beans, the Soul Stone is located on Vormir.
When they first arrive on Vormir, we see a very familiar face, Red Skull… He is trapped on the planet and cannot leave. He leads people to the Soul Stone, and he takes Thanos and Gamora to the pit. There’s a catch: in order to retrieve the stone, you must sacrifice something or someone you love… Gamora, thinking she has won and Thanos loves nothing cheers and jeers at him… Thanos cries and sobs, not because he has lost, but because he loves Gamora more than anything. Yes, Thanos sacrifices his own daughter in order to finish his plan. He’s willing to lose everything in order to save the universe. This scene is heartbreaking and will leave you teary-eyed or crying. The score, the dialogue, and just the facial emotions are everything in this scene.
Thor, Rocket, and Groot make it to Nidavellir but are met with a very grim discovery. Thanos has already discovered the planet and he has done something terrible. Eitri (Peter Dinklage), has made the Infinity Gauntlet for Thanos but at a price. Thanos has destroyed the planet and killed all the other Dwarves. He also has burned Eitri’s hands so that he cannot make another weapon. Thor needs him and the dying star in order to create the Stormbreaker, the “Thanos killing weapon.” It took a lot of hard work and dedication but Thor vowed that the second time he saw Thanos he would kill him. This was an incredible scene and Thor holding open the dying star to melt the Uru metal was an amazing sequence. It kind of leaves you in awe at how far along he’s come as a God in these films.
The battle on Titan is amazing. Doctor Strange uses the Time Stone to figure out all of the different outcomes. There are 14,000,605 outcomes and only one where the Avengers win. The sequence is insane and the fight is awesome. Thanos arrives and has almost immediately attacked by Iron Man, Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Spider-Man, and Doctor Strange. Star-Lord is curious about what has happened to Gamora and upon finding out she is dead… He loses his mind. As they are trying to take the Gauntlet and put Thanos to sleep Star-Lord begins attacking him and hitting him causing him to awaken. He then beats them in a pretty epic battle and almost kills Tony Stark. Doctor Strange gives up the Time Stone as a last-ditch effort even after telling Tony that he would let him and Peter die before surrendering the stone to Thanos. Thanos leaves the team bruised and beaten, thus leaving one stone left to attain. This scene was incredible on so many levels. Doctor Strange has clearly reached supreme status. There’s also some real action with Spider-Man saving the crew. My only complaint was some pretty wh CGI in one part of the scene where it totally looks like Tony is just standing in front of a projected image. Other than that, seeing Thanos go to all kinds of lengths to get the stone and the conversation he has with Tony Stark are amazing. Thanos reveals to Tony that he knows who he is and that he’s not the only one cursed with knowledge. He also tells him that he hopes the people of Earth remember him. Kind of leaving you wondering what will happen next.
The battle in Wakanda is also just as amazing. That battle sequence is my favorite for one reason, THOR. The whole thing starts off as everybody protecting Vision. Corvus Glaive, Proxima Midnight, and Black Dwarf all come with ships and a giant army of monsters to slaughter anybody that stands between them and the stone. The battle rages on for minutes and then it seems as though our heroes may fall. Corvus Glaive almost gets the stone from Vision. Scarlett Witch shows just how powerful she truly is. There is so much going on and the monsters begin to overrun Wakanda until BOOM!!!! Thor makes such an incredible entrance and gives the good guys a boost of energy. The problem is Bruce can’t turn into Hulk, so he’s stuck in the Hulkbuster until the monsters rip the suit off almost. Thanos makes his entrance to Wakanda and fights everybody there. He throws Bruce into a rock and leaves him stuck. It looks like Cap may be able to take on Thanos for a minute, but he loses with a right hook. Scarlett Witch must take the stone from Vision’s head. She doesn’t want to kill the man she loves but in order to save humanity, she must. She kills Vision and stops Thanos…. Until we realize Thanos has the Time Stone now. He uses it, goes back to that moment and rips the stone from Vision’s head. He leaves Vision dead and gone. Thor, who has been kicking ass since he got to Wakanda comes down and hits Thanos in the chest… Only for Thanos to utter the words, “Next time aim for the head.” Then *snap* and Thanos has single-handedly destroyed or balanced (depending on whose side you’re on) the universe. He is met by the child Gamora, who asks him how much did it cost him? He replies, “Everything.” We start to see the rest of the deaths like Groot, Bucky, Sam, T’Challa, Wanda, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Star-Lord, and Drax. Thus leaving only the original Avengers alive. The film ends on a beautiful note as Thanos does exactly what he promises after he balances the universe… He finds a beautiful planet and watches the sunrise.
The deaths of the characters after the finger snap all affected us and were hard to watch. Some of the characters had to watch their loved ones die. Captain America had to watch Bucky die, and he doesn’t even know about Sam. Okoye had to watch T’Challa die. Rocket had to watch Groot die. Tony had to watch Peter die. Wanda has to watch Vision die twice. There are so many ways they break your heart in this film that it’s insane. You go in happy and hopeful and leave with heartbreak and despair.
These scenes, sequences, deaths, all of it… Are heartbreaking and shattering. This is what makes this film so amazing. The villain, you can actually understand, the action, comedy, and sadness all weigh each other perfectly. There’s truly never a dull moment in this film and the story is as compelling as any. The writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely did a truly amazing job with such a tall task and Anthony and Joe Russo did one of the best jobs in recent years. This film is the Empire Strikes Back of our generation. This film along with the films before and after it will inspire children for years to come. Hopefully, not only to become filmmakers but storytellers as well. Both were very intricate parts of this epic. There was anguish, there was hurt, there was amazing acting and just everything around this film is awesome. I’m proud that a comic book film such as this exists now. We will wait the arrival of Avengers 4 but in the meantime, we still have to see Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel.
Rating: 9.5/10
