Avengers: Infinity War released last Friday and it’s already been met with astounding critical and commercial success. Fans have been satisfied with what this absolute marvel accomplished after 10 years of build up, but it would be remiss to say that Infinity War tied up all loose ends. Even though the Russo Brothers promised this wouldn’t be a part one of a two-part storyline, it couldn’t help but feel like that after the movie ended. Here are some of the biggest unanswered questions left in the air from Avengers: Infinity War.
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
What happened to KORG and VALKYRIE?
Thor: Ragnarök flowed quite nicely into Infinity War. It ended with Thor bringing the people of Asgard on a gigantic ship across the galaxy to Earth. Along the way, they’re stopped by an even greater ship helmed by Thanos, which is exactly where Infinity War picks up. Aboard the Asgardian ship were two of the most charismatic characters introduced in Ragnarök: Korg and Valkyrie. They were seen next to Thor at the end of that movie but were nowhere to be found in the opening scene of Infinity War. So what happened to them? Did they die at the hands of Thanos off-screen? It’s referenced in passing lines that Thanos only killed half of the Asgardians, so perhaps they got away with the other survivors in escape pods. There’s also the chance that they parted ways with Thor sometime before Thanos encountered them. Regardless, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has alluded that we haven’t seen the last of these characters, so they’re probably out in the galaxy somewhere.
Will we ever see the HULK again?
Infinity War gave us one of the coolest Hulk scenes when he went toe to toe with Thanos and almost met his fate, but that was the last we saw of him in the movie. For the rest of the story, he refused to transform, which is usually never a problem for Bruce Banner, presumably because he was scared to go up against Thanos again. Afterall, we’ve never really seen the Hulk face another being as strong as him, aside from Iron Man and Thor. Will the Hulk ever reveal himself again, though? More than likely: yes. Mark Ruffalo previously stated that they had come up with a three movie story arc for Bruce Banner/ the Hulk which spans from Thor: Ragnarok to Avengers 4. In Ragnarök, we saw a whole new side of Hulk that was in complete control of his body and had even developed low-level intelligence. In Infinity War, we saw Hulk suppress himself and refuse to show for the first time. Avengers 4 will likely show Banner and the Hulk finally gain a balance between each other in what will probably be their last movie.
What were HAWKEYE and ANT-MAN up to?
The biggest question leading up to Infinity War was focused on the absence of Hawkeye and Ant-Man. They were nowhere to be seen in the marketing, which only made fans desire them more, but sadly, we didn’t get to see either of them in the film. In a bit of a throwaway line, Black Widow reveals that the two of them agreed to go under house arrest in order to be with their families after they became fugitives of the law in Captain America: Civil War. This actually lines up with what we’ve seen so from Ant-Man and The Wasp. From the looks of it, that movie will take place before Infinity War, so we may see some major characters start to disappear at the end or in the post-credits scene. We also know for a fact that Ant-Man will be showing up in Avengers 4 thanks to some leaked set photos. As for Hawkeye, he was probably with his family on his farm during the events of Infinity War. He’s been very adamant about retiring and settling down, so perhaps he’s finally done it. He will definitely return for Avengers 4, though, so perhaps he feels the need to help after he sees all the deaths that occurred on the planet. Maybe he even experienced some death in his own household which is what insights him to pick up the identity of Ronin. Only time will tell, but hopefully fans are given more marketing or Hawkeye this time around.
What does the SOUL STONE do?
All of the Infinity Stones were introduced and explained in their own movie leading up to Infinity War. All of them except for the Soul Stone. Many theories surrounding the Soul Stone came up ranging from being inside Wakanda to being a part of Heimdall, but none of these turned out to be true. The real location of the Soul Stone was on a planet called Vormir where it was guarded by none other than the Red Skull. Thanos obtains the stone after sacrificing Gamora, but we never really see what it does. He never deliberately uses it like he does the other ones. In theory, Thanos should have a connection with every living soul in the universe. While this isn’t directly shown, it is alluded to in a couple different scenarios. In Thanos’ encounter with Tony Stark, he knows exactly who he is and utters the phrase, “You’re not the only one cursed with Infinite knowledge.” Perhaps he knows of Tony Stark because of his connection to the Soul Stone. We also see Thanos enter a hazy, orange plane after snapping his fingers. Many have speculated that this is connected to the Soul Stone because he sees Gamora in here. If this is true, this could be where all of the deceased people go after they are wiped out from existence. None of these are confirmed applications of the Soul Stone, but we will probably get a better idea of it in Avengers 4.
Which deaths are permanent?
The most shocking moment in Avengers: Ininfity War comes when Thanos finally retrieves all the stones and does the fatal snap of his fingers that had been alluded all movie. Half of the universe is wiped out from existence including several of our favorite heroes. Surely Marvel wouldn’t kill off all their new characters, though, so which of these deaths are permanent? It’s safe to assume that most of the deaths post snap will not last forever. Since only the original Avengers are still alive, they will likely find a way to either bring back their fallen heroes or reverse the event entirely. But that’s not to say there won’t be any more major deaths. The Russo brothers recently stated that “remarkable things can happen in a fantasy world, but they come at an incredibly high cost,” so we may see Cap, Tony, or more sacrifice themselves for the greater good of the universe. But what about the deaths pre-snap? Even before that moment, Infinity War had some major deaths. We see Heimdall and Loki meet their fate in the first scene. These are likely permanent as Thanos made it clear that Loki wouldn’t be coming back to life this time around. The next big death comes when Thanos sacrifices Gamora for the Soul Stone. This death was arguably the most impactful, and it doesn’t look like there are many options for her to come back, which would take Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in an interesting direction. Vision’s robotic life ends when Thanos rips the Mind Stone from his head, and he turns into a grey, lifeless corpse. While this death was very brutal, there is a possibility of Vision having life again. While Shuri was unsuccessful in removing the stone from his head, she did gather a lot of data on him, so she could upload his consciousness back into his body. We’ll have to wait for Avengers 4 to see who comes out alive, but chances are, it won’t be everybody.
What will happen in AVENGERS 4?
While Infinity War did end with a lot up in the air, it’s almost impossible to tell where the sequel will go. The general consensus is that the surviving heroes, mainly Tony Stark, will find a way to fix the situation. Some of the leaked set photos heavily imply that our main characters will go back in time to save the day. The photos show Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, and Ant-Man filming scenes similar to the first Avengers. Cap is even wearing his cheesy suit from that movie. The movie will probably play out showing the team traveling through time to different events in the MCU attempting to stop the devastating outcome of the future. Sacrifices will no doubt be made along the way, and the ending will see the new age of heroes stepping back into the spotlight. As for Thanos, it’s hard to tell what will happen with his character. As of now, he’s hiding out on some peaceful farm planet by himself, but perhaps he will become struck with grief after killing Gamora. One thing is for sure, Captain Marvel will join the battle. The end credits scene showed Nick Fury sending her a message before his disappearance, which will probably be elaborated on in her solo movie next year. She has been confirmed to appear in Avengers 4, and she will likely have a big impact on that movie helping restore the universe to its original state.
