Remember when Disney bought Fox? We all lost our minds because it was a major change in Hollywood and something we would probably never see again? Well, since then AT&T has tried to buy Time Warner and T-Mobile and Sprint have merged. Corporations are becoming less about competition and more about acquisition. Of course, these things must be approved by the DOJ as monopolies are illegal in the US. With that being said, Hasbro has just acquired a ton of assets from Saban.
This deal comes today via Business Wire. In a $522 million dollar purchase that includes cash and stock, Hasbro has bought My Pet Monster, Popples, Julius Jr., Luna Petunia, Treehouse Detectives, and Power Rangers among other things. The big thing that everybody is raving about is the Power Rangers being owned by Hasbro. The toy company that also has brought you some amazing blockbuster films (Transformers, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Battleship).
In a statement Hasbro’s chairman and chief executive, Brian Goldner said:
“Power Rangers is an iconic brand built on a heritage of great storytelling and merchandising with tremendous upside potential when fully executed across Hasbro’s Brand Blueprint. Shortly after entering into our licensing arrangement, it became clear that now was the time to begin investing in unlocking Power Rangers’ full potential. We see significant opportunity for Power Rangers across our entire Brand Blueprint, including toys and games, consumer products, digital gaming, and entertainment, as well as geographically throughout our global retail footprint. We couldn’t be more pleased that Haim Saban will continue in a consulting role to further guide our development of this valuable property for the next generation of Power Rangers fans.”
Haim Saban, founder of Saban Brands and creator of Power Rangers statement reads:
“25 years after launching Power Rangers, I believe the future for this brand has never been greater. Hasbro’s leadership in innovation, storytelling and brand stewardship make it the perfect company to further develop the global reach and appeal of the Power Rangers property. I look forward to working with Brian and the team in the years to come.”
The Power Rangers launched in 1993. They have become apart of pop culture. They had the Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers film in 1995. They are on their 25th season with Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel and have almost 900 episodes. They are televised in 150 markets globally. They also had the 2017 film Power Rangers under Saban and Lionsgate. There is so much potential with Power Rangers. I think Hasbro can unlock that potential. The first set of new Saban products bought by Hasbro will appear in 2019.
This is a huge win for Hasbro as they have Allspark Studios. The production studio for the toy company. They have teamed up with Paramount/Universal for G.I. Joe, Transformers, and TMNT as I stated earlier. There are some really cool potential crossovers with the Power Rangers added. Along with tons of material for the Power Rangers in general. Hopefully, we can get the Power Rangers franchise we deserve as fans now that Hasbro owns them.
