It is no secret that Disney is thriving with Marvel under their umbrella with their films. Their biggest film ever made, Avengers: Infinity War, has recently hit the theaters worldwide. The film made $250 million domestically on opening weekend, the largest in box office history. Your move, Warner Bros. DC and Marvel are on two very different paths respectively but have the same idea to produce superhero movies. The magnitude of the success that Marvel has, it hasn’t scared people, like actor Sterling K. Brown, from continually showing interest in joining the DCU.
Sure, the This is Us star already had an impactful role in a superhero film, in the mega success box office hit, Marvel’s Black Panther, but Brown wants more. He wants to play a superhero, he wants to put on a superhero mantle, help fight crime, and protect people. He wants to protect a sector of the galaxy, specifically Earth. Brown spoke with ET Canada last week during the Time’s 100 gala in New York about what character intrigues him the most.
“I wouldn’t mind being the Green Lantern. It would be fun. I’ve been watching cartoons since I was a kid. There was a black man portraying the Green Lantern. To see someone who looked like me meant a lot.”
For those of you who are not familiar with the Green Lantern that he is talking about, his name is John Stewart. Stewart is the second African-American to make an appearance as a superhero in DC Comics. Stewart was chosen by the police force of the galaxy called the Green Lantern Corps. His superpower is a green ring that is powered by the strength of will. Stewart is one of six Green Lanterns who is from Earth. Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, Simon Baz and Jessica Cruz are the others Lanterns working in different sectors of the galaxy.
It was thought that there were plans to make Green Lantern Corps in 2020. That all changed after the odd failure of Justice League in 2017. The project is currently in the limbo. Warner Bros. had to go through a leadership change in order to have a better structure if they are to create more successful DC live-action movies. So in the meantime, Warner Bros.’ timeline to create their own successful DC universe has been delayed and will be worked on slowly, starting with Aquaman, scheduled to come out in theaters this December.
Green Lantern deserves another chance of making another appearance on the big screen after the disaster of the previous Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, played by Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds fit the mold of who Hal is as an air force pilot and superhero. Ultimately the film, Green Lantern, was ahead of its time as the CGI back then was incredibly limited compared to now. I am all for Brown to appear in the DCU as John Stewart. With the work that Brown is doing on This is Us, I can totally buy and be emotionally invested in Brown becoming John Stewart and that he would bring justice as Green Lantern.
