Josh Holloway Was Originally Cast As GAMBIT In ‘X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE’

While promoting his third season of the TV series, Colony, on the USA Network, Josh Holloway shed some light regarding the failed movie blockbuster, X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Holloway was originally cast in the film back in 2009 to play the card dealing superhero, Gambit.

“I actually screen-tested with Hugh Jackman! ‘It was amazing’, they said, ‘You’re it, you’re the guy, you’re Gambit!’ and they shook my hand.”

“I could spin a card on one finger, I could one-hand cut, I learned [how] to throw a card. It was cool, [but] I’m terrible at the Cajun accent. I wish I could [do it].”

But Holloway’s excitement had to be contained because he was then rejected by some studio head at Fox. The studio head gave their opinion and ultimately decided that they wanted to go with a fresher face in Hollywood at the time. Which led to actor Taylor Kitsch, who was best known for his role on Friday Night Lights, eventually landing the role. Kitsch was 28 years old at the time while Holloway was 40 years old.

“[The studio head] said, ‘I want someone really young, like that kid in High School Musical!’, so there I went [and lost the role].“

Channing Tatum is the latest big name star in Hollywood who is interested in the playing the Cajun card dealing hero since 2014. The only problem is the project has been in the limbo ever since he was cast. The production had seen three directors, Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman and Gore Verbinski, all come and go from the project due to scheduling conflicts. It is possible that each of the directors couldn’t see eye to eye with Fox Studios on delivering the best possible version of storytelling for Gambit.
