Fans of Marvel Television’s many series have often been confused by the lack of crossover with the films. After a fairly connected season 1 of Agents of SHIELD, corporate shake-ups led to the television and film divisions of Marvel Entertainment operating with practically no relation to one another. It’s a surprise, then, that at one brief point some of these characters were set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War.

Speaking with Variety, co-director Anthony Russo gave some insight into their character selection process:

“We made the briefest consideration of [including TV characters in ‘Infinity War’], when we’re alone in a room with [screenwriters Christopher] Markus and [Stephen] McFeely, we consider every idea. We like thinking of everything. But it seemed like the story that had been told within the movies was so specific and elaborate already that once we started working through the story, we knew we had our hands full just with this set of characters and narratives.”

As enticing as the idea of seeing something like Daredevil team up with Iron Man might be, the team behind Avengers: Infinity War made the right call here. With marquee characters like Captain America getting significantly reduced roles, trying to shoehorn characters like the Defenders and Phil Coulson into the narrative might have collapsed such a balanced (pun intended) narrative.

On the other hand, we’re reaching a point where the adventures of the television characters are getting to be so huge that they need to be addressed on the film side eventually. However, it’s exciting to know that these conversations are being had!
