SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR BELOW
At the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War, some viewers may have been confused with the lack of screen time for the Hulk. As the marketing for the film featured Hulk , even including him in the trailers, many were excited to see the big green Avenger fighting alongside everyone else.
In the film’s opening scenes, the Hulk and Thanos go head to head with Thanos eventually overpowering the Hulk. Heimdall is then forced to open the Bifrost and send the defeated hero back to Earth. This scene is the last we see of the Hulk in the movie, with Bruce Banner, played by Mark Ruffalo, unable to transform into the “other guy.” While many attributed the Hulk refusing to come out to his beating at the hands of the Mad Titan, director Joe Russo shed some light onto the issue. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Russo revealed the reason behind Banner’s issue.
“I think people have interpreted it as Hulk’s scared. I mean, certainly, that’s not a… I don’t know that the Hulk is ever… he’s had his a** kicked before, and he loves a good fight. But I think that it’s really reflective of the journey from Ragnarok. These two characters are constantly in conflict with each other over control. And I think that if the Hulk were to say why, it’d be Banner only wants Hulk for fighting. I think he’s had enough of saving Banner’s a**.”
So, the Hulk was not scared of Thanos or just too injured to smash again, he was simply tired of fighting and constantly saving Bruce. In Thor: Ragnarok, it is revealed that Banner has been locked out by the Hulk for over two years with Hulk being the Grandmaster’s champion, participating in the Contest of Champions. The repetitive battles on Sakaar have finally caught up with the Hulk and he now wants to let Banner face his own problems.
With the conclusion of Avengers: Infinity War sparing Bruce Banner, the reappearance of the Hulk in Avengers 4 is up in the air. Will Bruce Banner continue to fight his own fights or will the Hulk come out once again to defeat Thanos?
