And that’s the waaaaay the news goes! Adult Swim’s most popular show finally gets more episodes ordered, and it’s a lot.
Rick and Morty is popular, to say the least. It’s fair to say it’s one of the most popular adult-aimed cartoons in years. But even after the lengthy, highly anticipated wait in between the second and third seasons, Adult Swim didn’t renew the show following the end of season three. Well apparently they were letting that renewal build up, because they just ordered the show in bulk.
Series co-creator and voice actor Justin Roiland took to his Twitter today to personally announce the show would indeed be coming back- and for seventy more episodes!
For comparison, the previous three seasons only have 31 episodes between them, so this order is more than double the show’s entire run up to this point. It’s an unexpected amount, but it makes sense. Like I already said, the show is huge. Ensuring that the crew keeps more episodes in the pipeline, rather than keeping angry internet fans in the dark, is a smart move.
However, like Roiland said in his tweet, renewal is one thing, but release is another. We still don’t know when the show will be returning, or if these new episodes will be split across multiple seasons. But regardless of when the show does resume, please be patient. #theydrawingit, after all.
