With the G.I. Joe toyline having been adapted to multiple television shows and movies over the years, there is now a spinoff movie in the works at Paramount Pictures centered around the character of Snake Eyes. The iconic silent ninja dressed in black made his first appearance in Hasbro and Marvel Comics’ toyline relaunch, titled G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. In addition, he has appeared in many of the toyline’s adaptations, including the two Paramount-produced movies: 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation.
Evan Spiliotopoulos, who wrote the recent live-action Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter’s War, is being considered to write the screenplay for the spinoff. Furthermore, Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner will serve as one of the film’s producers.
Paramount and Hasbro have expressed interest in rebooting the G.I. Joe movie franchise and this Snake Eyes movie was one of several ideas generated by the producers. Therefore, it is likely that the third G.I. Joe movie could involve different concepts in addition to being a Snake Eyes film. Both companies hope that this next entry in the series will make up for the critical and commercial failure of Retaliation.
