Another high-profile DC film project is looking to begin production sooner rather than later. According to Heroic Hollywood, Birds of Prey is looking to start production in January 2019. The studio also wants to secure an all-female crew for the Margot Robbie led movie.
Last month it was announced that Dead Pigs director Cathy Yan was set to direct Birds of Prey for Warner Brothers. Margot Robbie has been vocal about doing an all-female spinoff involving her Harley Quinn character for some time. A few were in development including Gotham City Sirens with Suicide Squad director David Ayer set to helm. That project appears to have been shelved at this point.
Christina Hodson was hired to write the script for Birds of Prey, with two different versions being commissioned. The one constant is that the film will feature Harley Quinn and Batgirl as the leads. The other heroines that could appear, based on the current comic lineup, includes Black Canary, Huntress, and Lady Blackhawk.
Margot Robbie recently teased a possible R-rating for the spinoff. It won’t be a sure thing until the MPAA gets its hands on it but it would mark the first comic expanded universe film, Marvel or DC to feature an R-rating.
