Over the past decade at least we have seen a large wave of zombie TV shows and films. These films/TV shows have come in the forms of The Walking Dead, iZombie, Fear the Walking Dead, World War Z, I Am Legend, Maze Runner, among others. In the course of those years, we also received Zombieland. The film starred Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, and Abigail Breslin; it also raked in $102.4 million dollars on a $23.6 million dollar budget.
A sequel has been in talks ever since. The film was directed by Ruben Fleisher, who is currently working on Sony’s Venom. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote the film. The duo gained tons of attention after they wrote Fox’s very successful Deadpool film and they came back to write Deadpool 2. They recently spoke to Vulture and talked about the possibility of Zombieland 2 being made:
“We’re going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland. Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don’t know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2. The hope is that we’re shooting that thing early 2019 for an October of ’19 release, with the original cast, by the way.”
Bringing back the original cast would be awesome. We all remember the film. A kid, Columbus (Eisenberg) who was trying to find his way back to his parents in Ohio after a zombie outbreak. On his way to find his parents, he runs into a group of odd characters Tallahassee (Harrelson), Wichita (Stone), and Little Rock (Breslin). They team together to try to get to a supposed safe haven in Los Angeles as they lay out a list of survival/zombie killing rules. The film is definitely a cult classic and Emma Stone and Jesse Eisenberg’s acting careers have taken off ever since. This film would definitely catch lots of attention and interest.
There have been many different versions of scripts for Zombieland 2. The most recent version of the script was 2016. Supposedly Sony was looking for a new writer for the film, but most likely we will see Reese and Wernick return. Especially after their success with Deadpool and projected success of Deadpool 2. Fleischer has always been attached to return as director. Fleischer is finishing up Venom which is due out in October and that would free up his schedule heading into early 2019. Zombieland 2 could begin filming as early as spring or before in 2019 as stated by Reese and Wernick. This all makes a pretty clear slate of possibilities for Zombieland 2. All we need is a completed script and an announcement from Sony.
