Epix has just picked up Pennyworth, a straight-to-order, 10-episode series detailing the origin of Batman’s trusted butler, Alfred Pennyworth. Bruno Heller, the showrunner from Gotham, will write the script and executive produce this new series. This new series will not be a spinoff of Gotham.
The series will focus on Alfred’s origin as a former British SAS soldier who forms a secret company and goes to work with Thomas Wayne in 1960s London. Sean Pertwee, from Gotham, will not be involved. In a joint statement, director Danny Cannon, and Bruno Heller had this to say about working with Epix:
“Michael and his colleagues have created the perfect venue for original storytelling, and all of us working on Pennyworth are thrilled to be on the Epix slate.”
Epix President, Michael Wright, had this to say about the television series:
“As genuine fans of these classic DC characters, as well as the incredibly talented Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon, we couldn’t be more excited to make Epix the home of this series. We can’t wait to work with Bruno and Danny — along with Peter Roth, Susan Rovner, Brett Paul and the team at Warner Horizon — on this fantastic origin story.”
All I could think about when seeing this news was the opener for the latest Teen Titans Go! To The Movies trailer that promoted “Alfred: The Movie,” creating a rise out of Batman’s trusted sidekick, Robin.
