Recently, Marvel President Kevin Feige revealed that there are big plans to bring Kamala Khan also known as Ms. Marvel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since Feige’s hints, Rogue One star Riz Ahmed has expressed his interest in writing a script for the young superhero on Twitter. Ahmed didn’t stop there, also taking the same opportunity to team up with fellow actors, Mindy Kaling and Kumail Nanjiani, on potentially writing the screenplay for the film.
For those of you who are unfamiliar with Khan Ms. Marvel, she is a Pakistani American teenager born in the New Jersey. She is also the first Muslim superhero to appear in Marvel Comics. Khan is also an Inhuman that has powers to be a polymorph, which means she can grow her arms and legs bigger and change shapes. Khan took on the superhero persona, Ms. Marvel, because of her idol in Captain Marvel.
Kaling saw Ahmed’s tweet and was not afraid to share her excitement on helping tell the story of Ms. Marvel.
All three actors have prior experience in screenwriting. Ahmed directed and wrote a short film called Daytimer back in 2014. The short film was about a young boy who decides to skip school to attend his first rave concert. Kaling wrote a number of episodes and directing them during her time on the popular TV show, The Office. Lastly, Nanjiani and his wife, Emily V. Gordon, were Academy Award-nominated for their work on The Big Sick this year for original screenplay. It is also interesting that Ahmed, Kaling, and Nanjiani could be potential writers to tell the origin of Khan becoming Ms. Marvel. Knowing all their acting backgrounds, this film could be funny and also help shed light on the issues that Muslims deal with in the real world today if they were penned to write the script.
It is unknown when Khan would make her debut in the MCU. One possible scenario that we could see Ms. Marvel on the big screen, is appearing in Captain Marvel, which stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers in 2019. Another theory is she could be appearing in Phase 4 instead. I think it would be extremely cool if she could make a cameo in another MCU film first before getting her solo film. I would love to see her make an appearance in Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, which will be the first film to kick off phase 4. The interaction between her and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man would be intriguing to see considering they are both young superheroes.
