Fans of Star Wars, particularly the original trilogy, have long awaited for more information on the charming, yet mysterious, Lando Calrissian. Well, fans now have the opportunity to learn more about this character in the upcoming movie, Solo: A Star Wars Story, set to release May 25 in the United States. With the film exploring mainly Han Solo, other characters like Chewbacca and Lando will have their fair share of screen time as well.

As many critics have already seen the film, some have referred to the banter between Solo and Calrissian as “flirting”, and others have also revealed Lando’s sexual preferences are spoken of in a few dialogues. These recent reports, along with older speculations based on interactions within Empire Strikes Back, beg the question: what is his sexuality?

When the HuffPost spoke with co-writer Jonathan Kasdan, the topic of Lando’s sexual fluidity was brought up. They asked if he was pansexual, to which Kasdan replied:

“I would say yes.”

For anyone not aware, pansexual people are attracted to all kinds of people, regardless of their gender, sex or presentation. This basically confirms that Lando is open to all beings across the galaxy including males, females, and droids. Kasdan also then went on more, saying:

“There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of.”

Kasdan mentions he would of liked a more explicit LGBT character in the movie, as Lando’s pansexuality is such a minute detail. With the Star Wars universe filled with such a wide and varied range of characters, it’s surprising we haven’t seen more LGBT characters. Episode VII and IX director J.J. Abrams has touched upon more diversity with the first female and black leads in a Star Wars film, so the possibility of an openly LGBT character is not entirely out of the picture, we will just have us wait and see.
