WARNING: SPOILERS FOR DEADPOOL 2
If you haven’t seen the newest installment in the Deadpool franchise then leave now, I’m about to spoil the chimichangas out of it. In the strong likelihood you’ve seen it, you may have noticed something in Deadpool 2 that although seemed insignificant, could tease a major crossover event between Avengers and the X-Men.
During key sequences in the film, posters with the words “M-Day” can be seen. Specifically, when Deadpool (and what’s left of the X-Force) head back to the Essex House to confront Firefist towards the end of the film. The banners and posters are used by the anti-mutant organization, but there is more meaning to it. In the comics, there’s a major story called House of M from 2005. This book was pushed as one of, if not, the biggest crossover between Avengers and X-Men.
The storyline had Scarlet Witch (Wanda Maximoff), a member of the Avengers at the time, still reeling from killing a few of her fellow teammates. Fearing she would be being executed by the Avengers/X-Men for it, Wanda altered the timeline with a spell that gave Mutants what they’ve wanted: to live in peace with regular humans. This alters everything in many unexpected ways, including but not limited to making Magneto the leader of the United States and having Wolverine the head of S.H.I.E.L.D.
By the end of the story, Scarlet Witch comes to the conclusion that mutants must come to an end in order for actual peace to exist. In order to do so, she says the words “no more mutants”, which causes the timeline to return to normal but also remove the powers of almost every mutant. This event is referred to in the Marvel Universe as “M-Day”.
In the context of Deadpool 2, it could be seen the anti-mutant organization is predicting or planning for the end of the homo-superior. However, the mention of the specific phrase “M-Day” could be them teasing the possibility of crossing over the MCU if the Fox/Disney deal goes through. I think it’s very possible, just not for the near future.
Elizabeth Olsen, who currently plays Scarlet Witch in the MCU, has already exclaimed her interest for doing a film that concentrates on the House of M story. There’s a high chance she’ll become an even larger player in the films post-Avengers, so there’s certainly a way to adapt the iconic story and have it be as effective.
Keep in mind, this is all speculation at this point, so don’t take this tease by Deadpool 2 as any sign of confirmation they are doing House of M. I see it more like an invitation to the MCU to do so, and that people behind the film are willing to do it if possible.
