‘DEADPOOL 2’ Is Getting An Extended Cut, According To Director David Leitch

Ryan Reynolds most recent romp as the fan favorite merc with a mouth in Deadpool 2 has been getting praise from fans and critics alike. The film is already breaking some box office records and looks to have a great future ahead of it. But what really makes the film unique is its runtime, clocking in at a little under two hours, much less than a typical superhero film. But for those who wished the movie was a bit longer there is hope as the director of the film, David Leitch, has confirmed an extended cut is in the works.

In a recent interview with CinemaBlend, Leitch had this to say,

“There’s an extended cut. And I think that they may want to spin that out as a special thing, but right now I’m sort of… we’re taking our time, and it’s going back to the ‘director cut,’ and then sort of collaborating with Ryan [Reynolds], Rhett [Reese], and Paul [Wernick], and making sure we’re all getting all the jokes we want – to have it be fun and our sort of fun collaboration.”

As of now, it seems that the distribution method has not been fully hammered out but we should at least expect a Blu-ray release. Whats also interesting is that the extended cut seems to only clock in with an extra 12 minutes, which came as a bit of a surprise to Ryan Reynolds himself. Leitch continuing on with the interview stated,

“It was funny, because we shot… it was like an 83 day shoot, and it was a lot of material. But I kept telling the studio, and I kept telling Ryan, I’m like, ‘No, the director’s cut going to come in at like 2:12.’ And he’s like, ‘No way!’ And I’m like, ‘It is! It’s going to come in at 2:12. I want to make it tight. I want you guys to get a really tight first look at the film. I don’t think it needs to be bloated and I’m not that type of filmmaker.'”

Leitch elaborated that the extended cut would include some additional jokes not seen in the final film, some extra scenes in the X-mansion, and a montage of sorts featuring Deadpool trying to kill himself in new ways. It will be interesting to see what this adds to the film given it had such a tight narrative that kept the film’s fast pace intact.
