The Guardians will be back.
Details have been trickling out about the much anticipated third Guardians of the Galaxy film with James Gunn recently revealing that the title is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and that filming is set to being in February.
With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 now moving into pre-production, writer/director James Gunn has started to fill out his production crew. The newest hire is production designer Beth Mickle who has worked on films such as Only God Forgives, 2 Guns, and Drive.
During the events of Infinity War, the Guardians kept the same light-hearted tone and neon aesthetic that made the first 2 Guardians films so successful. However, Mickle’s previous production design has been much darker than your typical Guardians film.
In both Only God Forgives (right) and Drive (left), there is a fair share of neon but it is contrasted with deeper blacks that could signal a more serious Guardians film to close out the trilogy. The highly emotional Ego storyline at the end of Guardians 2 showed that James Gunn was willing to take risks with his characters and they more than paid off.
Time will tell if this hire is a sign that the Guardians will be taking a darker path in their third film or if James Gunn will continue with the same 80’s space aesthetic of the first 2 Guardians movies.
