It’s hard to know what to expect with Amazon’s upcoming Lord of the Rings series. Following the mixed reception of The Hobbit trilogy, most audiences are likely to approach anything Middle Earth-related with an air of skepticism. Following Peter Jackson’s interview with French publication AlloCine today, that skepticism will only increase.
In the interview, translated into English by Birth.Movies.Death., the long time franchise director clarified his role in the new series:
I’m not involved at all in the Lord of the Rings series. I understand how my name could come up, but there is nothing happening with me on this project.
That feels pretty definitive, although Jackson decided to take it one step further when asked about any potential involvement with a film in the DC Extended Universe:
That’s not true. I had no discussions about that. I’m not a fan of comics, I’ve never read any, so I’m not particularly interested in adapting one for cinema. That’s not true at all.
In short, count Jackson out for anything Lord of the Rings or comic involved. While this may seem like a bit of a bummer, Jackson seems content, and judging by the stellar trailer for the next film he’s produced, Mortal Engines, he’s going to continue to do fascinating projects for the foreseeable future.
