While thousands of fans anxiously await the eighth season of HBO’s smash-hit television series ‘Game of Thrones,’ producers and executives behind the scenes are hard at work looking to expand the universe that the show, along with the novels penned by George R.R. Martin, has created.
HBO is beginning the first stages of that universe expanding with a pilot order of an untitled ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel series, the brainchild of Jane Goldman, who has previously co-written the screenplays for Kingsman: The Secret Service, X-Men: First Class, and Kick Ass. Martin himself has also had a big hand in creating the story which the prequel pilot and subsequent series looks to revolve around.
Set thousand of years prior to the events fans have experienced in the last 7 seasons of ‘Game of Thrones’, the prequel will tell the tale of the world’s decline from the Golden Age into the world on fire setting familiar to the show these days. HBO released the following tease for the series along with the announcement:
“Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the White Walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend… it’s not the story we think we know.”
While fans all around the world were devastated to hear that 2019’s eighth season would be the show’s last, Martin has stated for years that he and HBO were working on a number of shows that would easily take its place.
