In what comes as a huge surprise to fans it has just been announced that DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns is stepping down from his position. And Johns will now be entering into an exclusive writer-producer deal with Warner Bros.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Johns will be launching his own production company, Mad Ghost Productions, a new banner that will see him work on content for film, television, and comics. Johns will still have a hand in current DC properties along with new and reimagined creations. In the wake of Johns exit, it has been announced that current DC Entertainment publisher Jim Lee will assume the chief creative officer position. Lee will also continue to serve as publisher alongside Dan DiDio.
This move for Johns will take him out of the executive ranks and place him more so in the creative world. Johns has continued to serve as a creative force for DC while serving as DC Entertainment president but now hopefully he will have even more freedom to create content. We should soon see Johns become a major force of content which has long been demanded by fans of the DC universe.
Concerning his move, Johns had this to say,
“I took on a role at DCE because I love the characters and this universe more than anything. But, I want to spend my days writing and on set. I’m thrilled to get back to a more hands-on creative role. It’s a dream job on dream projects, reaching even deeper into DC’s vast pantheon of characters.”
And it seems that Johns will be jumping right back into the creative world as his first project will be Green Lantern Corps. Johns will write the screenplay for the film and will serve as one of the producers. This comes along with his writing and producing credits on Wonder Woman 2 and Aquaman.
On the comic side of this move Johns will still remain a major force in the DC universe, and hopefully, this will free him up to create even more content. Johns is currently working on Doomsday Clock a sequel to Watchmen and it looks like we will soon have even more books from him soon. Johns will be writing and curating a new DC pop-up label, The Killing Zone, which will focus on new and lesser-known or dormant DC characters and titles. Johns will also be writing a new Shazam comic series which will launch this fall as well as a comic titled The Three Jokers, with art from Jason Fabok. The latter comic has long been anticipated by fans as Johns set the groundwork for it in DC Universe: Rebirth.
DiDio and Lee had this to say about Johns move back to DC’s creative ranks,
“Geoff is one of DC Comics’ most prolific writers, and we can’t wait to see what he does next now that he will be dedicating 100 percent of his time to telling the best DC stories possible across all media.”
This news of Johns move away from the boardroom seems to be just the change DC needs. It will be great to see him have more time to create great content for fans of the DC universe.
