SPOILERS FOR AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR
It’s no secret that a lot of characters died in Infinity War. I mean… a LOT of characters died, but there’s no way all of those characters will remain dead. Right? Almost all of them have confirmed sequels like Spider-Man, Black Panther, and especially the Guardians of the Galaxy. With Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on the horizon, most or all of the deceased Guardians will surely come back to life before then. Well, Avengers: Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo may be teasing otherwise.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, the Russos discussed how time doesn’t move linearly in the MCU the way it does in the real world. Meaning, just because Avengers 4 comes out a year after Infinity War doesn’t mean it takes place a year later. They were then asked how it would play out seeing dead characters in their respective sequels, i.e., seeing the deceased Guardians return for Vol. 3. Joe Russo replied teasing that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 may take place before Infinity War.
“There’s four years between Guardians 2 and Infinity War That’s a long time, and a lot of Guardians stories to tell. Again, as Anthony said, don’t expect everything to move forward in a linear fashion in the Marvel universe.”
If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 does indeed take place before Infinity War, then this means we may not see all of the Guardians brought back to life in Avengers 4 like many have assumed. Since Vol. 2 only takes place a couple months after the first, that leaves the door open for Vol. 3 to take place anywhere in the four-year time span until Infinity War.
So, will Vol. 3 take place before Infinity War like the Russos are teasing? Probably not. Guardians director James Gunn has previously stated that Vol. 3 will take place after the events of Avengers 4. Also, having the movie set before Infinity War would lessen some of the emotional stakes because we already know how they will end up later on, and we won’t get to see them deal with the aftermath of Infinity War and Avengers 4. While the Russos do seem to tease that the Guardians will remain dead in Avengers 4, I wouldn’t count on that being true.
