Since its acquisition by Walt Disney Pictures, Lucasfilm has released 4 Star Wars films. Whether or not they have been as universally loved by audiences, they have brought in a boatload of cash for both studios.
Another project that Disney expressed interest in producing after the deal went through was a fifth Indiana Jones film, which would bring Harrison Ford back to the iconic role. That desire has taken its sweet time coming to fruition but it has leaped forward quite a bit with its most recent development.
According to Collider, Jonathan Kasdan, the man behind the screenplay for Solo: A Star Wars Story, has officially signed on to replace David Koepp as the screenwriter for the highly anticipated 5th installment of the popular film franchise. Fun fact: Kasdan is the son of the man who wrote the script for Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark Lawrence Kasdan.
Directed by Stephen Spielberg, the sequel is likely to feature Ford’s last time playing the famous role as many fans are predicting that he will pass the torch to another performer who will, hopefully, keep the franchise alive for years to come.
Along with the news of the film getting a new screenwriter, Variety is reporting that the it has hit a serious snag in production. Originally scheduled to begin production in April of 2019 in the United Kingdom, reports are coming in and claiming sources close to the project is saying that shooting will not begin until much, much later into next year. Which would also point to the currently scheduled release date of July 10, 2020 looking less likely than ever. Insiders are claiming that the creative forces that be at Lucasfilm and Disney are not agreeing on the terms for a plan for the film and Kasdan has been brought in to restart from scratch.
If these reports are true, this would be the second time Indiana Jones 5 has been pushed back, as it was originally set to come out in the winter of 2019. Regardless of the bumps in the road, it seems clear that both Spielberg and Ford are committed to bringing their classic and iconic character back to life for one last ride.
What do you think? When will Indiana Jones 5 be released? Are the constant setbacks quelling excitement in the project? Will Shia Lebeouf be involved?! Let us know in the comments below and @superbromovies.
