DEADPOOL Creator Rob Liefeld Got Into Trouble For Asking Russell Crowe To Read For CABLE

Deadpool 2 hit theaters back in May, dominating the box office and winning over comic book fans everywhere in the process. During the film’s development, the filmmakers enacted a wide search to fill the role of Cable, Wade Wilson’s gruff, time traveling frenemy. The part ultimately went to Avengers: Infinity War star Josh Brolin, but actors like Brad Pitt and Michael Shannon were rumored to be considered. However, there’s one actor who was sought out by Deadpool’s creator himself, Rob Liefeld, and needless to say, the attempt he made didn’t go over as planned.

In an exclusive from Collider, Liefeld reveals that he himself tweeted at Gladiator star Russell Crowe, and requested that the actor read for the role of Cable for Deadpool 2. As you’ll see, the move landed him in some hot water.

“One night before I went to bed, I didn’t know Russell Crowe was on Twitter, and I stupidly tweeted to Russell Crowe – not ever thinking he’d answer me – and I go ‘Hey Russell, you should read for Cable!’ That didn’t turn out very well, I got yelled at a lot, because I woke up – because he’s in Australia – to Russell Crowe saying ‘Read for it?!’ And my manager said ‘Yeah, Russell Crowe doesn’t read for parts Rob, you kind of insulted him. I’m like ‘I’m sorry! They just haven’t picked Cable yet so I’m just putting it out there.’ And then my phone rings, so some Fox people may or may not have yelled at me for an hour.”

So, it seems that Crowe has reached a point in his career where he no longer has to read for a role. Instead, he’ll just decide if he wants it or not. It’s clear Liefeld meant no disrespect, and I’d say Josh Brolin was the perfect fit for the character. Perhaps it’s a good thing that Crowe playing Cable was an idea that could not be entertained.
