It seems that the long-awaited Black Widow solo film has finally found itself a director. Marvel Studios’ search for a director saw them meet with well over 70 potential directors but the search has finally ended with the announcement that Cate Shortland will helm the film.
Cate Shortland, the Austrailian director, has worked previously on the Nazi drama Lore and will soon director Scarlett Johansson in her first solo adventure. The search for a director lasted over half a year and included roughly 70 possible candidates. The studio prioritized a female director and was eventually narrowed down to such names as Amma Asante (Belle, A United Kingdom) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) being the finalists with Shortland.
It seems that Johansson was pushing for Shortland to helm the film as she admired her handling of the female lead in Lore. The film will be set before the events of Avengers and will be Marvel’s second female-centric movie following next years Captain Marvel.
