Joss Whedon, the man with an extensive geek resume, is today adding a new original property to his credits. His most high profile gigs have been as writer/director on Marvel’s The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, as well as replacement director on DC’s Justice League. Before his big budget Hollywood days, Whedon was best known for showrunning many genre shows. His TV credits include Buffy The Vampire Slayer, its spinoff Angel, Firefly, Dollhouse, and Agents of Shield.
HBO has announced today that it will be home to Joss Whedon’s next original idea. The sci-fi drama called The Nevers recieved a straight-to-series order. HBO beat out competition including Netflix for the series. The Nevers is described as “a sci-fi epic about a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.” Whedon shared his excitement for the series with the following statement.
“I honestly couldn’t be more excited. The Nevers is maybe the most ambitious narrative I’ve created, and I can’t imagine a better home for it than HBO. Not only are they the masters of cinematic longform, but their instant understanding of my odd, intimate epic was as emotional as it was incisive. It’s been too long since I created an entirely new fictional world, and the HBO team offers not just scope and experience, not just ‘prestige,’ but a passionate collaboration. I could go on, but — I’m impatiently grateful to say — I have work to do.”
