Dumbledore & Grindelwald Won’t Share Any Scenes Together In ‘FANTASTIC BEASTS 2’

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them reignited the beloved Harry Potter franchise back in 2016, and ventured into previously uncharted territory in JK Rowling’s wizarding world. New creatures, locations and characters expanded upon everything fans already adore, and the sequel, The Crimes of Grindelwald, looks set to explore even more new ground. Sadly, however, it seems two fan favorites won’t be meeting face to face in the upcoming prequel.

Dumbledore and Grindelwald have a long and storied history in the Harry Potter lore, and both will be portrayed by Jude Law and Johnny Depp, respectively. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Law revealed that he did not film any scenes at all with Depp during production.

“I don’t actually have any scenes with Johnny. As I said before, this is only Part 2 of a longer story. I’ve always admired him from afar, but we don’t know each other, and I’ve not yet met him on this. In many ways that suits the relationship as it’s been many years since they’ve seen each other. So there’s complexity in that that’s fun to mine. Again, the past will reveal itself.”

While some might be disappointed to learn the two characters won’t share the screen together, it’s important to remember that The Crimes of Grindelwald is only part 2 of the planned five film long Fantastic Beasts series. It’s certainly a possibility that Dumbledore will face off with Depp’s antagonistic wizard at some point. Still, considering the romantic relationship the pair supposedly shared, it’s a bit odd that the filmmakers would choose not to explore their relationship in the upcoming sequel.

Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald – “At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.”
