When Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight was released in July 2008, it immediately became one of the most highly regarded superhero movies of all time in addition to becoming one of the biggest box-office hits of the 21st century. Although the superhero movie has changed in the years since the movie’s release, it is still considered to be one of the finest in the subgenre. Now that it has reached its tenth anniversary, Warner Bros. has decided to re-release the film in four IMAX theaters across the United States. The movie will have a one-week engagement for theaters in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Toronto on August 24th.
One of the stand-out elements is Nolan and cinematographer Wally Pfister’s decision to shoot a portion of the film with 70mm IMAX cameras. This meant that certain scenes would be of a taller aspect ratio than the standard anamorphic widescreen ratio and that detail would be razor-sharp. Nolan would use the IMAX format for many of his future projects, and other filmmakers like J.J. Abrams and Brad Bird would eventually use it for their own films.
The film will be re-released in the following theaters, with tickets soon to be available for purchase on Friday, July 20th:
AMC Universal Citywalk IMAX, Universal City
AMC Lincoln Square IMAX, New York
AMC Metreon IMAX, San Francisco
Ontario Place Cinesphere IMAX, Toronto
Considering that The Dark Knight is one of the first major Hollywood blockbusters to utilize the IMAX format, it will entice those who did not originally experience it this way to take this new opportunity. In addition, this re-release will allow those who enjoyed the IMAX experience for this movie to experience it another time. Although the theater selection is limited, the idea that the studio decided to commemorate the film in some capacity is still a delight.
