During a Screenrant interview while promoting Mission Impossible: Fallout, which is out in theaters everywhere today, director Christopher McQuarrie left the door open to joining the DC Universe.
“To me, I’m interested in a good story. That’s really what it is. I mean, when Man of Steel came up, it was because somebody had asked me, did I want to work with Henry again? Which I would in a second. I go through the door that opens.”
After working with Henry Cavill on Fallout, I would be ecstatic to see McQuarrie work with Cavill on Man of Steel 2. I would even go as far as letting McQuarrie write the script for it. After seeing Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation and Mission Impossible- Fallout, I believe that McQuarrie could bring justice for Superman in another solo film. McQuarrie didn’t stop there with the Man of Steel as he is open to directing another superhero in another part of the galaxy in the DC Universe. Tom Cruise has been long rumored to be in the running to play Hal Jordan of the Green Lantern Corps. McQuarrie has also been rumored to be wanted by Warner Bros. for the directing chair on Green Lantern Corps.
“You know, I got to say, Tom and I have never talked about it. We always kind of talk about what we’re working on or what we’re talking about working on next. I think, again, I think if you show them a good story, I think if you showed him a really emotional story, I don’t think, you know, it’s, I can never predict. I can never predict what it is he’s going to be drawn to.”
McQuarrie could do amazing movies with either of the titular superheroes. The only thing that could possibly hold him back from working on either of the superheroes’ solo films is the fans’ backlash. I don’t blame him for that because that kind of backlash can affect someone’s thinking of making films. Backlash of any kind can deeply affect one’s look at life and their creativity path of making films the way they want to, so I don’t blame McQuarrie for being skeptical about taking on a job in that capacity.
