Disney is adding another princess to the Magical Kingdom.
Disney bought Sade, a pitch about a young African girl who must save her kingdom from evil with the help of some newly acquired magical powers and the kingdom’s prince. The movie was pitched by Ola Shokunbi and Lindsey Reed Palmer who will co-write the screenplay.
Dope director Rick Famuyiwa is attached to produce the film with Scott Falconer on board to executive produce. Falconer is best known for his production design work with Famuyiwa on Dope. However, a director has not been attached to the film yet. The film will be made under the Verse Production banner.
Disney has experienced incredible box office success recently by already accounting for 36% of the box office revenue in 2018, and that trend does not appear to be stopping anytime soon. The three highest grossing films of the year have all been Disney films with the biggest being Avengers: Infinity War with an over $2 billion worldwide box office total. Domestically, Disney has already crossed $2.5 billion for the year with films like Christopher Robin, Mary Poppins Returns, and Wreck it Ralph 2 still set to release.
Disney has been dominant lately and that won’t end anytime soon with the recent purchase of Fox and a slate full of live action films in the coming years including Mulan, Aladdin, The Lion King, and now Sadé.
