Ever since James Gunn’s abrupt firing last month, his Guardians of the Galaxy cast mates have declared their undying loyalty and respect for the director. Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, and Bradley Cooper have all taken a stand against Disney’s controversial decision to remove Gunn from the upcoming Vol. 3. Now, according to Deadline, Marvel themselves want Gunn back in the director’s chair.
“Nobody is talking about it, but sources said that back channel conversations are taking place between Marvel Studios and Disney,” reports Deadline. “Sources said the Marvel contingent is trying to persuade Disney to explore a compromise that might bring Gunn back into the fold for Guardians 3, something that clearly would be best for the franchise.”
Their source also claims that while there’s no strong arming or clash going on between Marvel ad Disney, the conversation came about after the cast and crew made it clear that they stand behind Gunn, and that they want him to return. Gunn’s firing came about after some of his decade old tweets surfaced, in which he made offensive and crude jokes that haven’t sat well with Disney executives. Though Gunn was very clearly joking, the tweets resulted in him being removed from the Marvel threequel.
Doing a third Guardians without James Gunn attached would be difficult, as he not only directed the previous two installments, but also had input on the first film’s script and wrote Vol. 2 himself. He even wrote the Guardians’ dialogue for Avengers: Infinity War, and with his voice being all over Star-Lord and his band of galactic misfits, it’d be a daunting task finding anyone who knows the ins and outs of these characters as well as he does.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set for release in 2020.
