Last week, it was reported that Warner Brothers was developing a Supergirl film with 22 Jump Street scribe Oren Uziel set to write the script. News that should come at no surprise is that WB is looking to hire a female director to helm the film. Whoever is chosen would join Patty Jenkins, Cathy Yan, and Ava Duvernay in the ranks of females to helm a DCEU film.
No short-list has been announced for Supergirl as the film is still in early stages of development. Although, the fact the studio is committing to a female director this early on bodes well for the direction they hope to take the project.
In what has become a welcome trend in Hollywood, major studios are attempting to give women filmmakers opportunities to direct blockbusters. The job Patty Jenkins did with Wonder Woman has been seen as a turning point, especially at Warner Brothers, to be outspoken about the idea of hiring female directors.
Marvel has also gotten on board, with Anna Boden being brought on, along with her directing partner Ryan Fleck, to direct Captain Marvel. Recently, the Black Widow solo film was pushed further in development when they brought on Berlin Syndrome director Cate Shortland to helm the project.
