Richard “Dick” Grayson is set to get an upgrade on DC’s Titans as he’ll be trading in his Robin suit for something more fitting. We’ve exclusively learned that he’ll be taking on the persona of Nightwing in the first season of the show.
Brenton Thwaites is set to portray Dick Grayson aka Robin, and he’ll be using that alias for most of the season. However, he’s going to move unto the next stage of his superhero career before the season ends. Taking on the role of Nightwing, he will have a new comic-accurate suit that will please fans of the character. Don’t worry, he’ll be using his classic Escrima sticks as his main weapons of choice. The only thing up for speculation is his suit color; which will be black with either blue or red trimming, the former being most likely.
If you’re afraid the suit will be disappointing, fear not, expect the same amount of care put into the Robin suit in the Nightwing one. Fun fact: the suit was among some of costume department’s favorite designs.
Titans finds Dick Grayson operating in the city with the same suit and name he used during his time as Batman’s sidekick. After an apparent fallout with his adoptive father Bruce Wayne, he’s now a detective who uses his spare time to continue his vigilante efforts. At a certain point in the show, he will become Nightwing and he’ll stay that way going forward. It’s said that of all potential Titans spinoffs on the table, Nightwing is a top contender. I wouldn’t hold my breath though for any announcements until Titans is released.
In the comics, his resentment towards Bruce Wayne, and learning to move forward from it, has a lot to do with his transition into the hero we know him today. It seems like the show will lean into that, as well as have him grow into a new version of himself. Let’s be honest, I doubt he’ll be saying f*** Batman the whole season.
Putting the trailer aside, I think the show will deliver on these classic DC characters by giving them a good amount of time to learn and evolve. I have faith they’ll do Nightwing justice, especially because they’re smart enough to know how many fans love this character.
Titans stars Brendan Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Ryan Potter as Beast, and Teagan Croft as Raven. The show is expected to hit DC’s streaming service later this year.
