About a month ago, the world turned upside down when executives at Walt Disney Pictures made the decision to terminate its relationship with James Gunn following a bevy of inappropriate and offensive tweets from the writer/director. In the aftermath Gunn’s release, many members of the cast and crew have been extremely vocal about the decision and chose to stand by their friend and offer endless support.
None have been louder and more supportive than Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer in the cosmic corner of the MCU. He has gone as far as personally calling out Disney in a series of critical tweets aimed at the conglomerate.
While little is known about the status of the future of the MCU (except the release of Captain Marvel, Avengers 4, and Spider-Man: Far From Home in 2019), the semi-permanent shelving of the third chapter of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, creatively constructed by James Gunn, could spell some bad news for the characters currently tied up in the crossover storyline taking place in Avengers: Infinity War and next years fourth Avengers film.
During a recent conversation with Digital Spy, Bautista shed some light on how the production of Avengers 4 could be affected by the Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3 delay.
“It’s kind of a strange situation to be in now where we’ve lost our director for Guardians. Guardians 3 is really up in the air and I don’t know what they’re going to do with it. It’s on permanent hold for now, and that may make a difference in what they do with our characters in Avengers 4. To be honest with you, right now I really don’t know. But I know I’m in Avengers 4. I’ve shot most of it already. I do have two days of reshoots. But other than that, I have some really great scenes that I hope they use. But I guess that it remains to be seen what they’ll do with the characters.”
While it seems clear that Avengers 4 is being set up to not only end the current stories taking place in the MCU but to also set up the future of the franchise going forward. And the confusion of what will happen with Star-Lord and the gang may just factor into how the plot will play out. The entire year of 2017 was spent filming both the third and fourth Avengers films simultaneously with reshoots to come later this year, but it is not out of the realm of possibility that Joe and Anthony Russo, the directors of both films, make some vital plot decisions that could alter the entire future of the MCU.
