During a panel at Heroes and Villains Fan Fest in London, Stephen Amell, who plays Oliver Queen also known as the Green Arrow on the CW Network’s Arrow, spoke about the early daiys of the show and pointed out that the first season was shot in a similar style to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.
“When the show started the inspiration for the first season was absolutely, positively The Dark Knight. When I was sitting in [Arrow pilot director] David Nutter’s office, it was just photos of The Dark Knight. That was the inspiration for the first season.”
Using Dark Knight material helped make Arrow become a fan favorite show and drew a lot of viewers in the first two seasons. During its six years on the CW, the show drifted slowly from the Dark Knight inspiration to finding its source material. According to Amell, Season 7 this Fall will continuing diving into its comic roots, but will introduce a different approach with Queen serving time in a SuperMax prison.
“I think that we’re going to lean more into the comic, and canon, version of the Green Arrow this year. The show is the show, and I am me. I feel like I’m in the greatest show right now. I think that’s one of the things I’m getting out of what they’ve planned for season seven. We’re not writing like we’re guaranteed something beyond this, because we’re not. Nobody is. I want [the writers] to really push forward and take the fact we have a certain license and a certain respect from the fans to take some chances.”
Having a gritty approach and doing what it takes to get the job done in order to protect the city is what made Batman so iconic and interesting. In the first two seasons of Arrow, Queen provided that same feeling of becoming an iconic character and superhero as the Green Arrow. Hopefully, Season 7 will continue being in familiar grounds of Dark Knight material, while exploring more of its comic roots.

It’s funny that he believes that. The fans are sick of the show crapping on comics canon for 6 seasons and we can’t believe this season will be any different. If he wants to stick to Green Arrow canon, bring back Laurel as Black Canary! End olicity and get back to canon.
