Henry Cavill has been the face of the DCEU since it’s inception. Beginning with Man of Steel, he has set the tone of the universe. His character arc has led him from a somber, guilt ridden messiah to a now gleeful incarnation fans have waited for. But just as he reached this point in the narrative, real world missteps have forced Cavill to step down.
UPDATE: Warner Bros has now officially released a statement regarding Henry Cavill’s apparent exit as Superman, all hope isn’t lost:
“While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged”
A solo Superman sequel has been put off for sometime. Talks involving Cavill have recently only focused on cameo roles. Currently, WB wants him to appear in Shazam! but due to scheduling conflicts, Cavill could not agree. This has led to a full blown breakup between the actor and studio. WB sees the next solo Superman film as several years away and is willing to go the James Bond route and just recast in universe.
Cavill recently took the lead role in Netflix’s The Witcher series which could have been seen as writing on the wall for this news.
WB is looking at Supergirl as the future of the franchise. The solo film, that is currently in development, is said to be an origin story featuring the teen superheroine.
