After a summer of looking at many candidates, Chloe Zhao, best known for indie film hits, The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me, has been chosen to direct Marvel’s next big project, The Eternals.
Zhao will also be teaming up with writers Matthew and Ryan Zirpo, who wrote the spec script, Ruin, that won 2017’s Black List, to bring The Eternals to life on the big screen. In 1976, Jack Kirby had a vision of a world of super-powered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and Deviants that were created by cosmic beings known as Celestials.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, one part of the story will focus on the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans.
Marvel studios and Zhao are not strangers as Zhao was on the shortlist for Black Widow, starring Scarlett Johansson, before losing to Cate Shortland. Watchmen pilot director, Nicole Kassell, Travis Knight (Bumblebee, Kubo and the Two Strings), Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra, the duo behind Colombian movie Birds of Passage, were the other candidates in the running for The Eternals directing gig.
