While the release of Avengers 4 is just a little over six months away, fans still don’t have an official word on what the actual title of the movie is.
But while fans may not know what the title of the movie is going to be, they do know at least one thing about it: according to Chris Evans, Avengers 4 is going to be his last in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Evans, who has played the role of Steve Rodgers/Captain America since 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, took to Twitter to provide an update on the filming of Avengers 4 while also posting a heartfelt farewell message to the cast, crew, and fans, thanking them for the memories of the past eight years.
Officially wrapped on Avengers 4. It was an emotional day to say the least. Playing this role over the last 8 years has been an honor. To everyone in front of the camera, behind the camera, and in the audience, thank you for the memories! Eternally grateful.
While some may accuse Evans of tweeting a spoiler alert, it’s key to remember that Evans’ contract expires after this film, which marks his 10th appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including cameos). Whether or not his contract expiration translates into his character being killed is yet to be seen.
However, when considering both Captain America’s arch in the MCU so far and the current situation that the Avengers find themselves in, it’s more likely than not that Avengers 4 (which will likely be titled Avengers: End Game) will feature the death of the Avengers’ leader.
That said, while this may be Chris Evans final appearance as Captain America, that doesn’t mean the character will not have a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe — some fans have speculated that either Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes or Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will take up the mantle, while others have suggested the role could be recast outright.
Avengers 4 will release in theaters on May 3, 2019.
A culmination of 22 interconnected films, the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.
