Epix’s series centered around Bruce Wayne’s butler Alfred has found its titular star. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jack Bannon has been cast in the lead role for the upcoming Pennyworth.
Bannon appeared in 2014s The Imitation Game alongside Benedict Cumberbatch. The same year, he had a small role in the David Ayer directed film Fury. His other credits include stints on TV series such as Endeavour and Clique.
The series, which is being developed by Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, will follow Alfred following his time as a British SAS spy. Set in 1960s London, Pennyworth will see Bannon’s character form a security company that leads to him working for Thomas Wayne.
THR’s report describes this Alfred as “a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty, people would never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.”
Although speculated, Pennyworth will not serve as a prequel to Gotham. Fans believed, given the focus on the series, that this iteration of the character would lead directly into Sean Pertwee’s version on the Fox drama.
