For the last ten years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has led the pack in terms of interconnected storylines. The TV shows on ABC have proved to exist in the same universe as their films and the Netflix series’ have suffered consequences based on the events happening in both. This year’s Avengers: Infinity War really culminated the shared cinematic universe that has been built up ever since Nick Fury revealed the “larger universe” in the end-credits scene of 2008’s Iron Man.
However, recently, the stakes that have plagued the Avengers on the large screen have not had the same trickle down affect with the heroes of the small screen. The infamous ‘snap’ by Thanos has yet to make its presence felt in any of the MCU TV shows and the 5th season of ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ merely mentioned The Mad Titan by name and moved on with its own narrative.
The creative powers-that-be are aware of the desire that fans have to see their favorite characters interact in any way, shape, or form. Recently, during a conversation with ComicBook.com, the Executive Vice President of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb reminded fans that the MCU TV universe extends beyond Netlix and ABC to Hulu and Freeform as well with ‘Runaways’ and ‘Clock & Dagger,’ and he did not shy away from a potential crossover taking place between the characters on those programs.
“What we like what Josh [Schwartz] and Steph [Savage] is that this [Runaways] is a show that can stay on its own,” Loeb told ComicBook.com. “It can reference the rest of the world, but it’s true to teenagers — they’re not interested in what Tony Stark is doing this week or what Matt Murdock is doing this week but they might be interested in a couple of kids who live down in New Orleans and what’s going on there.”
While this is in no way a confirmation that Tyrone and Tandy will make their way to the West Coast to help the likes of Alex, Nico, and Gert in their ongoing battle with their evil parents but the fact that Loeb is publicly teasing the possibility is enough to get any Marvel fan eager for the upcoming second seasons of both shows. ‘Cloak & Dagger’ has already done a good job of teasing the larger MCU with mentions of Tony Stark, Danny Rand, and Misty Knight.
