Winter is coming, but HBO was ready.
HBO has tapped two time Oscar nominee Naomi Watts to star in the prequel to the popular Game of Thrones series. The series will be set thousands of years before the Robert Baratheon took power, and reveal the dark past of Westeros and the origins of the White Walkers.
Jane Goldman will serve as the showrunner and will write the series along with George R.R. Martin. Goldman is best known for writing and producing both Kingsmen films, writing X-Men: First Class, and co-producing the cult classic Kick-Ass. The show-runners for Game of Thrones, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, will not be a part of the prequel series so that they can focus on the final season of Game of Thrones.
Attaching a big name actress to the series is quite a departure from the casting in Game of Thrones. The show was a launching pad for careers and served as the first major role for Emilia Clarke, Kit Harrington, and Sophie Turner along with many others.
Multiple spin-offs of the incredibly popular Game of Thrones series have been announced, but this prequel is the farthest in development. A premiere date for the pilot has not been announced yet, but HBO’s Casey Bloys said to The Hollywood Reporter that none of the spinoffs will air “until at least a year after the final season” which is set to start in late Spring or Summer of 2019.
