No superhero action movie would be able to have intense fight scenes if not for the presence of a highly capable stunt team, and the upcoming DCEU film Birds of Prey is no exception. It turns out that ahead of the film’s scheduled January 2019 production start date, the film has brought on stunt coordinators Jonathan Eusebio and Jon Valera.
Eusebio and Valera are members of the stunt company 87Eleven Action Design and have worked on a variety of blockbuster action films. Both have contributed to films directed by 87Eleven creators Chad Stahelski and David Leitch such as the John Wick series, Atomic Blonde, and Deadpool 2. In addition, Eusebio’s projects include The Fate of the Furious and Black Panther while Valera’s projects include Aquaman, Creed II, and Thor: Ragnarok.
Eusebio confirmed the news to us, and added that he will also be serving as a second unit director on the film.
Given the pair’s experience on large-scale action scenes for superhero movies, it makes sense they would be brought on to a project that could benefit from their handling of fight choreography. Although the film’s director, Cathy Yan, has largely worked on intimate short films as opposed to action-oriented studio films, Eusebio and Valera have enough experience so that they can make her transition to direct choreographed fights smooth.
What do you think about Eusebio and Valera being brought on to coordinate the stunts for Birds of Prey? Be sure to tweet your thoughts at @superbromovies and stay tuned for more Birds of Prey news. – Mark Tan
