Another cult classic movie is receiving a remake. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary has acquired the film rights to The Toxic Avenger, with the intention of turning the property into a big-budget franchise.
Original film directors Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz are attached to the remake as producers. A director and writer have yet to be chosen.
In 1984, Troma Entertainment released the original film with a less than stellar box office return. The film brought in $800,000 on a $500,000 budget. In subsequent years, the character found a home on the pages of Marvel Comics with The Toxic Avenger comic, which ran for 11 issues.
It wasn’t until 2010 that talks of a remake of the film began, with Arnold Schwarzenegger being eyed for the lead role. That project stayed in development for close to a decade, but never got its feet off the ground.
