Who ya gonna call?? The son of the director of the original! It’s not as catchy as ‘Ghostbusters!’ but it’ll have to do. Jason Reitman has been tasked with co-writing and directing a new Ghostbusters film set in the original universe.
Jason Reitman, director of Juno, Tully and Young Adult, will be taking over the reigns of the beloved franchise his father helped create decades ago. Here’s what Reitman told EW:
“I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans,” Reitman says. “This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the ‘80s happened in the ‘80s, and this is set in the present day.”
The plan is to begin filming in the next few months with a released dated for Summer 2020.
“This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present. We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet.”
Sounds like Reitman has a plan for what he wants to do with this franchise. It’s unclear if Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd or Ernie Hudson will return but it wouldn’t be surprising to see cameo’s at the very least. Unfortunately, Harold Ramis passed away in 2014.
Clarifying that the film takes place in the original universe almost but guarantees we won’t see the characters from the 2016 reboot.
