One of the most surprising stories of 2018 was the critical and commercial success of the latest installment to the Transformers film franchise, Bumblebee. The prequel film, starring Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena, has earned an astonishing $401.3 million dollars worldwide and many, including our very own Rascal F. Kennedy, has hailed the movie as the “best Transformers film yet.”
As first reported by Deadline, there is currently a sequel in development at Paramount Pictures. This should come to no surprise to anyone who saw the film as it definitely left things open-ended for the characters to return to tackle the next challenge. Nancy Tartaglione from Deadline goes as far as to speculate that the film might feature a buddy-cop aspect between Bumblebee and Optimus Prime, who are by far the most well-known characters within the Transformers universe.
Serving as an origin story for Bumblebee and introducing the world to the Autobots and Decepticons alike, Bumblebee has given Transformers a new lease on life following disappointing additions to the series starring Mark Wahlberg in the last few years. Producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura comments on what the creative powers-that-be had in mind when production began.
“We had many objectives (including) to bring a new set of families into the series, and that succeeded; in the after markets that will continue to succeed in a big way. Part of our obligation was to bring people back who had left the franchise or never experienced it which worked well… We are finding our way. Our intention was we wanted to please the core fans but also bring a new audience.”
