Every X-Man confirmed in the MCU so far (and who’s still missing)

Updated Sep 28, 2026: Added Asa Germann’s Angel to the X-Men reboot cast and X-Men ’97 season 2.

The X-Men are finally, actually in the MCU, and they’re showing up in three waves at once. Fox’s original mutants are confirmed for Avengers: Doomsday on December 18. Marvel Studios’ own rebooted team has a director, a cast and a May 5, 2028 release date. And a handful of mutants are already quietly hanging around the MCU. Here’s every one that’s confirmed, what’s still just rumor, and who’s still missing.

Light spoiler note: this article names mutants revealed in movies released between 2022 and July 2026, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day. No Doomsday spoilers, because nobody’s seen it yet.

Every X-Men MCU character so far, at a glance

The Fox X-Men in Avengers: Doomsday

The biggest reveal from Marvel’s empty-chairs casting livestream in March 2025 wasn’t an Avenger. It was the Fox X-Men walking in as a team. Confirmed for Doomsday:

• Patrick Stewart as Professor X
• Ian McKellen as Magneto
• James Marsden as Cyclops
• Kelsey Grammer as Beast
• Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler
• Rebecca Romijn as Mystique
• Channing Tatum as Gambit

Quick clarification: these are the X-Men from Fox’s films, not new MCU versions. The movie’s premise has heroes from three universes facing Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom as the multiverse collapses. Theirs is one of the three, next to the main MCU and the Fantastic Four’s world.

For Marsden, Cumming and Romijn especially, this is a real make-good. Marsden’s Cyclops got sidelined for most of the Fox era, and Cumming hasn’t played Nightcrawler since X2 in 2003. Tatum’s Gambit is the odd one out: Deadpool & Wolverine was the first time you actually got to see him, years after his solo movie fell apart at Fox.

Mutants already on screen in the MCU

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Still the biggest pile of mutants in one MCU film. Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine leads it, alongside Dafne Keen’s X-23, Aaron Stanford’s Pyro, Tyler Mane’s Sabretooth, Tatum’s Gambit and Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova, plus Deadpool regulars Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Yukio and Colossus. Most of them came from Fox universes, so their MCU future is a big question mark. Gambit’s the only one confirmed to be coming back.

Professor X in Multiverse of Madness (2022)

Stewart’s first MCU appearance was a variant from Earth-838, part of that world’s Illuminati. You remember how that went for him. His return in Doomsday means Marvel wasn’t done with Stewart, even if it was done with that version.

Beast in The Marvels (2023)

The Marvels’ post-credits scene gave us Kelsey Grammer’s Beast, his first appearance in an MCU film. At the time, it was the clearest sign the Fox X-Men universe would matter. Doomsday is where that finally pays off.

Namor in Wakanda Forever (2022)

Plot twist a lot of people missed: the MCU’s Namor is a mutant. His ankle wings and his long life come from a mutation that sets him apart from the rest of his people, and Wakanda Forever names him as one. That makes him arguably the first mutant born in the main MCU universe. Tenoch Huerta Mejía is back for Doomsday.

Kamala Khan’s “mutation” (Ms. Marvel, 2022)

In the Ms. Marvel finale, Bruno tells Kamala there’s something different in her genes, and the X-Men ’97 theme plays underneath. Great moment. Since then? Nobody in the MCU has used the word “mutant” for her. Count it as a strong hint, not a confirmation.

Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

The first “real” MCU X-Man. Sadie Sink’s mystery role in Brand New Day turned out to be Jean Grey, and Marvel has since confirmed her for the new X-Men film. Honestly, it’s a smart way in. The biggest movie of the year, at about $2.5 billion worldwide, doubled as the launch of Marvel’s mutant franchise. More on the film in our Brand New Day streaming guide.

The new X-Men movie (May 5, 2028)

This is Marvel Studios’ own X-Men, and it’s separate from the Fox team in Doomsday. Here’s what’s confirmed:

• Release date: May 5, 2028, in theaters.
• Director: Jake Schreier, who made Thunderbolts*.
• Writers: Beef creator Lee Sung Jin and The Bear’s Joanna Calo are writing the script. Michael Lesslie wrote an earlier draft.
• Cast: Marvel announced the team at D23 in August 2026. It’s Sadie Sink (Jean Grey), Kit Connor (Cyclops), Christopher Abbott (Professor X), Samara Weaving (Emma Frost), Inde Navarrette (Rogue), Maya Boyd (Storm) and Adam Driver as Nathaniel Milbury, a name comics readers know as one of Mister Sinister’s aliases. Variety and the other trades report the role as Mister Sinister.
• Latest addition: Asa Germann (Gen V) has been cast as Angel, reported Sep 10, 2026 by Variety, The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline. Marvel hasn’t announced it itself yet.

That’s a young team built around the original five: Jean, Scott, Warren and a Professor X, with Emma Frost and Rogue as the modern additions. Sinister as the first villain? No notes. He’s obsessed with mutant genetics, and with Jean and Scott in particular, which gives the film a built-in reason to center them.

What about X-Men ’97?

The animated series comes from Marvel Studios Animation but runs in its own continuity, so none of it counts toward the live-action MCU. It’s still the best X-Men thing Marvel has made in years. Season 2 premiered on Disney+ on July 1, 2026, with Apocalypse as the villain, and the whole thing is streaming now.

Rumored, not confirmed

• Hugh Jackman in Doomsday. Not confirmed. Asked directly, Jackman dodged the question, and James Marsden said in an interview that Jackman wasn’t on set with the X-Men. Marvel does hide cameos, so “no” isn’t the same as “definitely not.” Secret Wars (Dec 17, 2027) is the likelier landing spot, but that’s our guess.
• Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool. There have been conflicting reports about whether he’s in Doomsday. Treat it as unconfirmed.
• A new MCU Wolverine. He’s the obvious gap in the 2028 lineup, and the internet’s favorite fan-casting topic. Marvel hasn’t announced anyone.

Who’s still missing

A wish list, not a prediction:

• Wolverine, obviously, for the reboot.
• Iceman and a new Beast, to complete the original five alongside Jean, Scott and Warren.
• Magneto, in an MCU version. The reboot has Professor X but no announced Erik.
• Kitty Pryde, Colossus and a new Nightcrawler. The characters the Fox films never did justice to.
• The Sentinels, Apocalypse and the Brotherhood. The classic threats. Sinister gets first shot.

Our take: two X-Men teams is a feature, not a bug

Running the Fox X-Men and a brand-new team side by side could’ve been a mess. It works because Marvel is using each one for something different. Doomsday and Secret Wars give Stewart, McKellen and company the send-off the Fox films never managed; Dark Phoenix is nobody’s idea of an ending. The 2028 film then starts clean, with actors in their 20s and 30s who can carry a decade.

The smartest move so far was dropping Jean Grey into a Spider-Man movie instead of waiting for 2028. Millions of people met the MCU’s first real X-Man this summer without buying a ticket to an X-Men film. If Doomsday lands the Fox goodbye in December, Marvel’s mutant slate is in better shape than it’s been since X2.

Let’s be real: Marvel’s mutant rollout has been slow and scattered

We’re excited. We’re also not going to pretend the road here has been smooth.

• Years of teases, very little payoff. Namor in 2022, Kamala’s “mutation” in 2022, Beast in a 2023 post-credits scene. Then nothing that actually built a team until Jean Grey in 2026. Kamala’s hint still hasn’t been followed up at all. That’s a lot of breadcrumbs for one very long trail.
• The 2028 wait is wild. Marvel’s own X-Men movie is dated May 5, 2028. That’s almost two years after Jean’s debut and after two more Avengers films. The first real X-Man gets introduced, and then the team she belongs to sits on the bench.
• Nostalgia is doing the heavy lifting. The biggest mutant moment of the next two years is the Fox cast in Doomsday, not the new team. The legacy send-off is earned, but it also means the MCU’s X-Men era opens with actors from a franchise Marvel is replacing. The new crew won’t lead a movie until 2028.
• Casting by trade report. The D23 announcement was a proper reveal. Since then it’s been piecemeal: Angel landed via Variety, THR and Deadline, and Marvel still hasn’t confirmed it. Same with the Jackman question, which is stuck between a dodge and a set rumor. Fans are left piecing the lineup together from headlines.

To be fair, the pieces that are locked in look strong: a Thunderbolts* director, writers from Beef and The Bear, and a villain with a real reason to target this exact team. If Marvel starts talking about its new X-Men as loudly as it talks about the old ones, the wait might feel worth it.
